Geneva Clayton

On Saturday, September 8, just as the storms stopped and the morning broke, our mother, our friend, left this world to rejoin those she loved who had gone to prepare her way. Geneva was the only child born to the marriage of Richard Reehl and Nellie Johnson Reehl. She was reared by Richard and his second wife, Mary Lou Markus, who were aided by his sister, Leona Dempster. Geneva married Edward Clayton on June 9th, 1949. Over 42-years, they shared the joy of bringing four children into the world, Elaine (Timir Banerjee), Cynthia (Ralph Bell), Ricky (Mary Jo Doutaz), and Ronald (Joni). They welcomed grandchildren Rachel, Michael, Christie, Christopher, Justin, Damon, Lindsay, Chelsea and Jeremy and one great-grandchild, Nicole into their lives. Ed’s passing on July 31, 1991 left a void in Geneva’s life. They had enjoyed dancing, fishing and being out on the lake, and in 1998 Geneva found new love with an old friend, marrying Samuel Dickman, Sr. Together they welcomed additional grandchildren Hunter and Kendall, as well as great grandchildren Jayce and Madelyn. Sam’s passing in 2003 brought sorrow that could not be overcame. She continued to fish, teaching patience to young hands and in 2005 she drove the support vehicle for Dr Banerjee’s “Walk Across America,” bringing awareness through the SPAVA Foundation for the need to educate our youth in non-violent resolutions. Through the efforts of Elaine and Timir, mom enjoyed foreign travel, para-sailing in Greece, hiking through Australia and witnessing the majesty of Hawaii. Geneva continued to welcome new arrivals into her heart and home. Great grandchildren Landon, Caitlin and Conner were added, and thankfully, none were lost. Geneva passed quietly and peacefully, attended by her children. Her passing was eased through the effort and compassion of two caregivers, Renee’ and Anita. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation and debt of gratitude to them as well as to the Sam Swope Care Center, Mason’s Home, for providing as close to a home passing as was possible. Mom’s comfort was their paramount concern. Visitation with the family and celebration of her life will be on Tuesday from 10 am – 8 pm at Owen Funeral Home-Jeffersontown 9318 Taylorsville Rd. with burial service on Wednesday at 11. The family requests in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be given in support of SPAVA or through contributions to the Kosair Shrine Sam Swope Care Center, or a charity of your choosing.
