Mary Banbury

Mary Cecil Banbury slipped away from us peacefully on April 26, 2023, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, KY due to complications from heart surgery in early March. Things will never be the same without her. Mary was born on May 31, 1953, in Detroit, MI to Raymond and Marion Bennett. Mary was the third of three sisters after Sally Thomas and Susan Waters. Mary spent her childhood years in Royal Oak, MI and graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School in 1971. Mary and Lee met in middle school and started seeing each other in high school. They graduated in 1971 and married in 1976. She is survived by her beloved husband and three children, Barb (Hugo) Banbury of Seattle, WA, Kimberly (Casey) Overstreet or Louisville, KY, and Brian (Rebecca) Banbury of Indianapolis, IN. Sisters Sally Thomas and Sue (Dick) Waters, and nephews Richard (Melissa) Waters, Scott Waters, and Mark Thomas. In addition, she was blessed with eight grandchildren: Lexie, Lukas, Andrew, Anthony, Bennett, Greta, Elizabeth, and Evelyn. Mary had a lifelong passion to care for people and she especially loved children. After high school, she worked as a nurse’s aide while attending Shapiro School of Nursing in Detroit, Michigan. She found her calling as a Registered Nurse nurse and worked over 35 years in Labor and Delivery. The total number of women she helped and numbers of babies she helped bring into this world is just amazing. She was a generous contributor to St Jude’s Children Research Hospital in hopes to help ease the suffering of as many children and their families as possible. There is no doubt about her fulfilling her lifelong passion. Mary loved crafting. Her home is filled to the brim with items she made (or planned to make). She was a real “crafty chick”. She had many friends in states all over the country like Michigan, Nebraska, Kansas, Washington and of course Kentucky. All of them will miss her fun-loving smile and quick-witted humor. She also had a warm and loving compassion for animals of all kinds but especially loved her birds and dogs. She was a generous contributor to the Kentucky Humane Society. A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, May 8, 2023 at Owen Funeral Home – Jeffersontown, 9318 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, Kentucky 40299. We will receive friends and family from noon until the service begins. We would love for you to attend and celebrate Mary’s amazing life with us.
