Richard R. "Rick" Cusick II

Richard R. (Rick) Cusick II, 61, passed on June 19,2020. Rick was born on August 5, 1958, to Helen Marie Phillips Cusick and Richard R. Cusick Sr. He attended Bishop David High School, Bellarmine College, Jefferson Community College, and Georgia Tech University. Rick was a Kentucky Colonel. Rick was certified by the National Institute of Certified Engineering Technicians (NICET), and was a certified OSHA Construction Safety Instructor. Rick was a career employee of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet where he worked for over 27 years. During his career he was involved in many highway engineering projects in Jefferson, Bullitt, Oldham, Spencer, Henry, Trimble and Franklin counties. Some of the most notable were the completion of the Gene Snyder Freeway along with its interchange at I-65in Jefferson County; the construction of the new KY 55 from Jefferson County to Taylorsville in Spencer County; the complete reconstruction of I-65 in Jefferson and Bullitt Counties; the widening of the Watterson (I-264) Expressway from Dixie Highway (US 31W) to I-71 in Jefferson County; and the US 127 construction from Frankfort to Lawrenceburg which included twin bridges over the Kentucky River. Rick served as a supervisor in the Cabinet’s Louisville District Construction Office where he oversaw Safety and contractor compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity, Disadvantage Business Enterprise Program, and Prevailing Wage Law and regulations on all construction projects districtwide. He was also a frequent consultant to the University of Kentucky’s Transportation Research Center on construction safety and traffic control and was commended by the Center for his work done while serving as the district liaison during the establishment of the TRIMARC Incident Management Program in the Louisville Metro area. In later years, Rick served as the District Administrative Manager where he oversaw all the functions and employees of Louisville District’s Administrative, Accounting, Purchasing, Personnel, and Payroll Sections. Rick was named the 1997 Transportation Employee of the Year by The Kentucky Association of Transportation Engineers (KATE). Owen Funeral Home on Dixie Highway has been entrusted with the arrangements with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
