George Bernard Givens Sr.

February 22, 1956 - March 20, 2022

George Bernard Givens, Sr. 66, passed away Sunday, March 20, 2022 George grew up in PRP and graduated from Western High School in 1974 where he played football and was on the wrestling team. He resided in St. Matthews for the past 32 years. From early on he was an entrepreneur and said he would rather sell apples on a street corner than work for anyone. He spent his career owning and operating heating, cooling, and contracting companies. He started his first heating and cooling company in 1976. He built his HVAC company into a multimillion-dollar company and sold it to a national corporation in 1998. He then started Givens Contracting and ran it until 2018 before deciding to get back into the HVAC business and started Givens & Son Mechanical Services from 2018 – until present. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred (Scott) and Bernard Givens, and his sister, Shirley Scott Walker. George is survived by his wife of 32 years, Deborah (Hunter) Givens; children, George Givens, Jr. (Jennifer), Leslie Summitt (Chris), Greg Wells (Aijung), and Laura Payne; brother, James Givens (Donna): 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and granddog. He loved traveling with his wife. He was most proud of his 29-years of friendship with Bill W and sponsoring others. He was a Shriner, a member of Highland Park Masonic Lodge # 865, and served on the board of directors at Serenity House. More than all that, he was a very kind, unique and generous person and he had a great sense of humor. He never met a stranger and there wasn’t anyone that met him that didn’t like him. He made friendships that lasted a lifetime. If you were lucky enough to know George then you were truly blessed and his loss will be felt forever. His funeral service will be at 6:00 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2022, at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at Owen Funeral Home. He was a Shriner, a member of Highland Park Masonic Lodge # 865, and served on the board of directors at Serenity House. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus of Louisville or Serenity House in Jeffersonville, IN.
