Daniel Warren "Danny" Calkin

Daniel Warren "Danny" Calkin, 75, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on August 6, 2026. He was surrounded by family in his final days. Danny was born April 23, 1951, and was a Louisville native for most of his life. He graduated from Atherton High School. Drumming was Danny's passion from an early age, and it never let go of him. He taught at Durloff's Music and played with regional bands including Chicken Skin, The Shades, and BB Taylor over the years. Before that, he chased a different path in radio, learning the trade as a disc jockey in Nashville and later working at stations in Franklin, Indiana. Wherever Danny went, though, he found a way to turn something into a drum. If there was a tabletop or a steering wheel nearby, chances are he was keeping time on it, right up until his final days. Danny was a talker. He loved a good conversation and good food even more, and he spent a lot of his life getting to know people, one story at a time. Everyone who knew him says the same thing: he was a character, an optimist whose good mood was infectious. He was always cracking a joke or trying to get someone to laugh, and he could find the upside in almost any situation. He was an idea man too, always chasing the next big thing. His answer to most problems was simple: "Just keep on smiling". He was especially proud of his granddaughter, Sloane, and made sure everyone knew it. He carried her photo and showed it to nearly everyone he met. Danny is survived by his son, Nicholas Calkin, and Nicholas's wife, Ceci; his granddaughter, Sloane Calkin; his mother, Gayle Calkin; his sister, Gay Lynn Huber, and her son, Justin Huber; his brother, Thomas Scott Calkin, and his wife, Donna Calkin, and their children, Shane Thomas Calkin and Shannon Calkin Render; and his nieces and nephews through his late brother James: James Timothy Calkin, Warren Andrew Calkin, Cameron Calkin, Cassandra Calkin, and Hunter Baker. He was preceded in death by his father, Warren Raymond Calkin, and his brothers, William "Billy" Calkin, Timothy Calkin, Edward Calkin, and James Patrick Calkin. Per Danny's wishes, he was cremated, and his ashes will be spread at sea. No public service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hosparus Health of Louisville, in support of the hospice care Danny received in his final months.
