Pauline (Houchin) Carter

Pauline Houchin Carter, age 99, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, surrounded by her children. Born on February 5, 1927, in Cub Run, Kentucky, Pauline lived nearly a century defined by devotion to her family, quiet strength, resilience, and enduring love. Pauline’s life spanned generations, and her greatest joy was always her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Arthur Carter. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Francis Gonterman Rowe; her grandparents, Robert Alexander and Sarah Francis Gonterman who helped raise her; her brother, Wayburn Houchin; her son-in-law, Eddie Dillinger; and her grandson, Shaen Christopher Carter. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy through her children: James (Karen) Carter, Diana Dillinger, Philip (Michelle) Carter, Mark (Jeanette) Carter, and Tamela (Tonya) Hanson Carter. Her love multiplied through her grandchildren: Jared (Emily) Carter, Brian (Jennifer) Burgin, Chas (Melanie) Kuhn, Philip (Emma) Carter, Daniel (Kia) Carter, Charles (Alexa) Carter, Katherine Hensley, Elizabeth Carter, and Brandyn Hanson. Her family continued to grow with great-grandchildren Benjamin, Claire, and Ellie Carter; Robbie and Avery Burgin; Charles and George Kuhn; Harrison and Hollis Carter; and Makayla, Aubrey, and Landon Hensley. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Roma Houchin. In addition, she leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. The family also wishes to thank her many caregivers who supported her during the final two years of her life. In her younger years, Pauline enjoyed bowling and spending time searching for treasures at yard sales. She had an appreciation for simple pleasures and found joy in everyday moments. Her home was a place of steadiness and comfort. Family traditions were important to her, and she valued time around the table, conversation, and the gatherings that bring people together. Those who knew Pauline will remember her quiet determination and the steady way she carried herself through life’s changes. She experienced nearly a century of history, watching her family grow from children to grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Through it all, she remained a constant presence — dependable, loving, and proud of the family she helped shape. Ninety-nine years is a life well lived. While her family will miss her deeply, they are grateful for the many memories shared, the lessons she passed down, and the example she set of commitment and care for those she loved. Her legacy lives on in the generations that follow her. Visitation will be from 10am – 1pm at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway on Friday, February 13, 2026. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home immediately following visitation with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hosparus of Louisville.
