Thomas R. Hartley

Thomas Hartley, 90, passed away surrounded by family on August 8, 2026, in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on December 16, 1935, in Webster, Kentucky, to his late parents, Ruth and James Hartley. He was a devoted member of St. Polycarp Catholic Church for 58 years, where he faithfully served his church and community. He volunteered at church picnics, served as a member of the Parish Council, and was a dedicated member of the Booster Club, which raised significant funds over the years to benefit children. He was also a proud United States Marine Corps veteran and dedicated 38 years of service to South Central Bell before retiring. Throughout his life, he was known for his commitment to serving others and giving back to those around him. Above all else, he was a devoted family man who lived his life for the people he loved. His family was his greatest source of pride and joy, and he especially cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved nothing more than being in the stands and watching his grandchildren play sports, proudly cheering them on every step of the way. A passionate University of Kentucky sports fan, he enjoyed following the Wildcats and sharing his love of Kentucky sports with his family. His greatest legacy will be the love, memories, and lasting impact he leaves with his family and grandchildren. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 60 years, Clara Marie Hartley; his sons, Timothy and Thomas Hartley; siblings, Charles A. Hartley, Earl J. Hartley, Emma Lee Mefford, and Ann Schneider; and son-in-law, James Johnston. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Catherine Miller (David), William Hartley (Mathilda), James Hartley, Patricia Johnston, David Hartley (Jeanette), and Claire Gaffney (Steve); grandchildren, Michael Hartley (Lori), Christopher Johnston (Casey), Hannah Hartley, Jeffrey Miller (Leah), Rebecca Elswick (Christian), Jenna Johnston (Jeremy), Nikki Moreland, Lily Moreland, Katie Escudero (Rico), and Stephanie Downs (Matthew); and great-grandchildren, Clara, Grant, Brody, Knox, Joey, Brinley, Brooks, Madden, and Quinton. His funeral services will be provided by Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Hwy. Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. He will have a Mass the next day at St. Peter the Apostle, starting at 10:00 am, with burial to follow at Bethany Memorial Cemetery.
